Stranded Travelers Will Not Be Kicked Out Of Miami International Airport

SAFE PLACE TO WAIT OUT THE STORM. ALL RIGHT. MIKE CUGNO, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. SO THE AIRPORTS HAVE BEEN VERY BUSY PEOPLE TRYING TO GET OUT AHEAD OF THE STORM. ACTUALLY SOME PEOPLE STILL CULLING TO — COMING TO SOUTH FLORIDA TO LOOK AFTER THEIR PROPERTY. OR COMING OFF A CRUISE SHIP. OR COMING OFF A CRUISE SHIP DUMPED HERE WITHOUT ANY FLIGHTS TO TAKE YOU AWAY FROM SOUTH FLORIDA. HANK TESTER IS AT MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. WHAT’S THE SCENE THERE, HANK? Reporter: SOME OF THOSE FOLKS GOSSAMERSED CONNECTIONS AND BASICALLY YOU’VE GOT SOME PEOPLE THAT WILL BE IN THE SITUATION WHERE THEY MIGHT HAVE TO STAY IN THE AIRPORT. NOW, WE HAD REPORTS OF UP TO MAYBE 3000 OF THOSE FOLKS WOULD BE AT THIS AIRPORT. BY THE WAY, YOU DON’T SEE THIS VERY OFTEN. WANT TO TAKE THIS SHOT. THAT’S THE MAINTENANCE AREA THERE. IT’S ALWAYS BUSY. I MEAN, THERE’S PLANES EVERYWHERE. THE AIRLINES HAVE MOVED A LOT OF PLANES OUT BUT BACK TO THE BASICS HERE. THE SHELTERS SITUATION, IS THIS GOING TO BECOME AN AD HOC SHELTER FOR STRAND FOLKS? IT COULD VERY WELL GET TO THAT. THE NUMBERS WE DO NOT KNOW. BUT WE ASKED JACK, WHO’S THE PIO HERE AT MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ONE OF MANY THAT THEY HAVE WORKING TODAY. ABOUT THIS SITUATION. HERE’S WHAT HERE HAD TO SAY. THE AIRPORT IS NOT A SHELTER. AGAIN, I DO WANT TO MENTION THAT AGAIN. HOWEVER, IF THERE ARE STRANDERRED PASSENGERS THEY WILL NOT BE KICKED OUT. THEY MAY BE MOVED TO A SETTLEMENT EVENTUALLY. — SHELTER EVENTUALLY. THE AIRPORT DOES NOT CLOSE DOWN. THE GENERAL RULE OF THUMB IS AIRLINES, IF THERE’S WIND SPEEDS OF MORE THAN 35 MILES PER HOUR, THE AIRPLANES WILL NOT FLY. AFTER 55 MILES PER HOUR, THE TOWER SHUTS DOWN. THE AIRPORT HOWEVER, THE TERM FAMILIES DO NOT CLOSE. THEY STILL REMAIN OPEN. THERE WILL BE SOME RESTAURANTS THAT WILL BE OPEN. A HANDFUL. I UNDERSTAND DUNKING DOUGHNUTS AND BUGGER KING WILL BE OPEN. BUT WE WILL BE — BURGER KING WILL BE OPEN. WE WILL BE OPEN HERE. AND WE WILL NOT BE SHUTTING DOWN. OR KICKING PASSENGERS OUT OF THE AIRPORT. Reporter: OKAY. SO THAT’S THE STORY ON THAT ONE. WE, OF COURSE, WILL BE HANGING AROUND HERE FOR A WHILE TO SEE, IN FACT. I MEAN, THESE PEOPLE YOU AGAIN TO START SEEING THEM THEY’RE STRETCHED OUT IN THE — ON THE FLOOR OFTEN. SOMETIMES IN THE CHAIRS AND SO ON. AND THEY WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BE — THAT SITUATION THE STRANDED FOLKS THEY WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF. YOU HEARD THE INTERESTING THING THAT THEY MIGHT MOVE THEM TO ANOTHER SHELTER BUT THAT DEPENDS ON WHETHER OR NOT THERE’S WIND CONDITIONS WILL ALLOW. AS FAR AS THE AIRPORT IS CONCERNED, YOUR EUROPEAN FLIGHTS ARE GOING OUT. AMERICAN IS SENDING A PLANE TO DALLAS, THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE THE LAST PLANE OUT FOR AMERICAN. WE’RE TOLD BY FOLKS HERE AT THE AIRPORT THAT A LOT OF THESE AIRLINES ADDED EXTRA FLIGHTS TO GET PEOPLE OUT OF HERE. SO BASICALLY, IF YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT BUYING A TICKET AND GETTING OUT OF DODGE, JUST AHEAD OF THIS HURRICANE, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE TO BE. YOU BETTER GO CHARTER A PLANE FROM THE LEAR JET PEOPLE. DON’T YOU CHART E ANY PLANE. HANK FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT ABLE TO CHART A PLANE U. AUTO KNOW THERE WAS SOME PRICE GOUGING ISSUES. I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE OVER THE PAST WEEK OR S WE’VE SEEN A LOT OF REPORTS OF PEOPLE TYING TO BUY TICKETS THAT WERE 200, $300. WHEN THEY TRIED TO FINALIZE THE PURCHASE IT WENT UP TO $6000 IN SOME CASES. HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT ANYTHING IN TERMS OF THE AIRLINES GOUGING PEOPLE? Reporter: NO, I HAVE NOT RUN INTO THAT AT ALL. IN FACT, WE TALKED TO A GUY SOMETIME TONIGHT WE MIGHT GET IT ON TV FOR YOU. A GUY, IN FACT, THERE WERE TWO FOLKS FROM THE FORT LAUDERDALE AREA THAT CAME DOWN HERE, AND GOT 99-DOLLAR TICKETS ON MARE CANE AIRLINES. SO I’VE NOT HEARD THAT HERE. I’VE HEARD ABOUT IT AND KATHY THE STATE ATTORNEY TALKED ABOUT IT IN HER PRESS CONFERENCE THE OTHER DAY. BUT SHE DIDN’T GET INTO REAL SPECIFICS. I’VE NOT SEEN EVIDENCE OF A TICKET THAT SAYS $6000 TO FLY TO TAMPA OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. SO I HAVE NOT RUN INTO IT. BUT APPARENTLY IT’S OUT THERE. AND THE STATE ATTORNEY AND THE ATTORNEY FOR THE STATE OF FLORIDA, PAM BONDI. SHE HAS HELD PRESS CONFERENCES AND TALKED ABOUT IT. THEY HAVE MECHANISMS TO DEAL WITH THAT. VERY SERIOUS SITUATION. BUT SO FAR, THE FOLKS HERE, THAT WE TALKED TO YOU’LL SEE LATER ON TONIGHT, THEY SEEMED TO BE PRETTY HAPPY JUST TO GET OUT OF TOWN. AND WHAT’S INTERESTING IS WE WERE RUNNING INTO A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO WERE JUST PLAIN BOARDING UP, COMING TO THE AIRPORT AND GETTING OUT. ASKED ONE GUY, WHY YOU GOING TO DALLAS. HE SAYS THAT’S WERE I COULD GET

  1. where are all the military transport planes we taxpapers paid for? only good enough for Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria but not for America?

  2. The people in this airport are in deep, deep trouble. The roof of that airport will be off instantly, and all that flimsy airport crap inside will go flying around like a bomb went off inside, punching holes through walls. They could be in conditions like that for 10 hours. Think about that. This is effing horrific.

  3. Please don't go up to somebody stranded and ask the stupid question "how to you feel being stranded at this airport?" you may get punched in the face.

  4. I believe the rich got planed out.So when the ones who paid 99 dollars a ticket are next, they jus closed the doors. evil evil evil

  5. miami is evil! they made sure the rich was carried off who paid 2000 or 1400 for a one way flight. But suddenly the ones who have a 99 dollar ticket in hand, are stranded. I bet U,there is no billionaire or millionaire between the stranded. That's why the wrath of GD pummels U now, because of your greed

  6. If your stranded.I would begin looking for some type of hard hat! see if u can find anything corrugated to keep on the head,U never know.

  7. if your stranded please put on some hard jeans! do not wear anything thin or soft.make sure U put ona good pair of jeans,to protect u from anything. If U have summer short pants,u may be in trouble,u have to cover legs and feet.

  8. The damn airlines left people stranded and knew they were doing it. I think there needs to be more regulations. AND the price gouging….the gov needs to get to the bottom of it.

  9. Tickets over 3,000$. They r full of crap!,,, they started Friday with 900$ tickets all seats sold out..then prices gone up to thousands!,,,
