Rip currents affecting tourism along the coast

DROWNINGS AND RIP CURRENTS ARE HAVING AN EFFECT ON TOURISM. BUT, NOT EXACTLY IN THE WAY MANY WOULD THINK. W-N-C-T’S ELIZABETH TEW IS LIVE IN ATLANTIC BEACH TO EXPLAIN. ELIZABETH… KEN, SINCE I’VE BEEN OUT HERE AT ATLANTIC BEACH I’VE SEEN FEWER FOLKS THAN USUAL IN THE WATER.BUT THERE ARE STILL QUITE A FEW TOURISTS IN THE AREA.AND THEY’RE FLOCKING TO THE CIRCLE.WHICH IS GOOD NEWS FOR BUSINESSES THERE. NAT WATER THE TWO DROWNINGS ALONG OUR COAST WITHIN THE LAST WEEK AREN’T DETERRING FOLKS FROM VISITING. BUT THEY ARE CHANGING WHICH PART OF THE BEACH THAT THEY VISIT. LIFEGUARDS ARE ON DUTY IN ATLANTIC BEACH AT THE CIRCLE. AND MANY FOLKS ARE FLOCKING TO THE AREA FOR THE EXTRA SAFETY FACTOR. “you can go to fort macon state park and swim for free but there’s not lifeguards there. I would recommend anyone going in the ocean swimming to go where they have lifeguards.” WHICH IS GOOD NEWS FOR BUSINESSES RIGHT UP NEXT TO THE SAND LIKE DAVIS’S BEACHWEAR. WHOSE OWNER SAYS MORE PEOPLE ARE BUYING BOOGIE BOARDS BECAUSE OF THE ADDED SAFETY FACTOR OF THE LEASH. :13 “the leash attaches to here to down here and it attaches to your wrist so if you get in trouble you can pull it back and have something to float on.” ONE THING BUSINESSES HAVE NOTICED SINCE NEWS OF THE DROWNINGS.. “with the rip currents this year there are definitely less people in the water but business is still booming up here though.” BUSINESSES IN AND AROUND THE CIRCLE SAY THEY’RE SEEING MORE TOURISTS ALREADY THIS SEASON.THAN IN THE PAST. AND THEY EXPECT THAT TREND TO CONTINUE UPWARD DESPITE THE RECENT DROWNINGS. ELIZABETH TEW, 9 ON YOUR SIDE. IN YOUR MONDAY
