Prosperity Candle: Lighting the way for their employees

[MUSIC PLAYING] TED BARBER: When someone
gets their first paycheck and is earning their living
and able to contribute to our economy, I think
they’re no longer a refugee. They are a former refugee. I’m Ted Barber. I am a co-founder
of Prosperity Candle in Easthampton, just
north of Springfield. There are refugees
in the United States for many different
reasons, but we focus on employing women who
are coming out of war zones and relocated here
through federal programs. So we’re a business, just
like any other business, with one exception. We balance profit
with this mission to help women from places
of conflict to thrive. MOO KHO: When I arrived
in US from refugee camp, I’m excited and nervous,
too, about the language. And I don’t have transportation. I don’t have enough
money to pay the rent. I keep in my mind, if I try
harder, things will get better, but it is not easy. TED BARBER: Moo Kho has been
with us for seven years. She started out
as a candlemaker, but now is part of
our management team. MOO KHO: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] SPEAKER 1: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] TED BARBER: We make anywhere
from a few hundred candles a day to 1,000 candles
a day, all by hand. From the very beginning, we saw
ourselves as an online company. We don’t have a retail store. So everyone is finding
us through our website. That was very
important, because we wanted to reach people
across the United States and around the world. And we do. We have customers
all over the world. Over 80% of our candles
are made right here in the Springfield area. And we support
entrepreneurs in Baghdad, enabling them to make a product
to sell locally, as well as export candles to
the United States. And then we sell them
through our website. It was violent
there, and we weren’t allowed to even travel to Iraq. So we had to figure out
other ways to train them. Here is this guy in Western
Mass wearing an apron, creating these YouTube
videos for women in Baghdad. By the third or fourth
video, [LAUGHING] you could tell I was pretty hot. The moment we opened the
first box, we could feel it. There’s nothing like
holding something that you know someone across
the world has handmade. We’ve witnessed quite
a transformation in the women’s lives. For example, Moo Kho, she
applied for citizenship and passed the test
and recently purchased her first home, which is
an extraordinary experience for anyone, but even more so
knowing where she came from and where she started. MOO KHO: I really like
to live in Springfield. I got good neighbors and a
great school for my kids. They can build their dream. But I don’t like the weather. [LAUGHS] TED BARBER: Prosperity
Candle has grown tremendously over the years. But also, we are having
a positive impact on these wonderful people– their families, their
children, the next generation of Americans.

  5. Look I have no problem with this stuff. But I honestly hate how major companies like Google and the gov has pushed super super super hard for non white, non male, and people who weren't born here to have jobs over those who were born here. It's like they are bending over backwards after someone said they were racist.
The problem I have with this is I'm sitting here with 3 degrees, about to get another (because it's that or ….). And there still isn't any jobs around unless if I want to move across the country. It's a lot like how these celebs and what not try to adopt kids from overseas vs getting ones that are already here. The people who lose are the ones already here simply because they were American born. Even worst if they are a white male.

How about helping out your fellow American before 1 letting in someone from another country (giving they didn't help us in war times like Afghanistan. Which btw Obama's crew completely lied to those people and broke their contracts). And 2 pushing stuff like this.
Why not push things like maker spaces which helps people start a new company, or companies that act as stepping stones to get into something worth while.

Again, I don't have a problem with a company that helps out refugee women. And I think it is worth while. I have a problem with Google's priorities. Keep in mind how much money they spent showing off this and how much time went into this. And keep in mind why they are showing this (it is to show Google's values). They could've easily shown off something like a manufacturing plant that is helping the local area, or maybe how someone made a good size company from prototyping something within a makers space.

  6. Your intentions are noble. However, I take one exception in that, since I know Islam is an extremely violent, brutal, and also sometimes called "religion," (but more correctly known as a "manifesto"), I would have to know, unequivocally, that the people you serve are in no way related to Muslims. If you can assure me of that, then I would be happy to assist you.

  7. **What type of video production (i.e Cameras and Softwares) did you use? I loved it. A small story about production will be really helpful**
