MIT issues warning about visits from immigration officials

REED IS ON CAMPUS WITH THE
MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL. MATT? MATT: M.I.T. NOTIFIED FACULTY
AND STAFF THAT THEY COULD BE
EXPECTING A VISIT FROM ICE, AND
URGED COOPERATION WITH
IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS. THAT MEMO OBTAINED BY THE BOSTON
GLOBE, SAYS THE PURPOSE OF ICE’S
VISIT IS TO CHECK THE STATUS OF
FOREIGN POSTDOCTORAL STUDENTS,
RESEARCHERS AND VISITING
SCHOLARS. THOSE CHECKS COULD ALSO INCLUDE
IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS STOPPING
BY WORKSITES, LABORATORIES, AND
ASKING THE UNIVERSITY HOW TH
DECIDED ON A FOREIGN STUDENT’S
SALARY. THE NEWSPAPER REPORTS THAT THE
TWO-PAGE MEMO WAS SENT
FACULTY-WIDE YESTERDAY, AND SAID
FEDERAL OFFICIALS ARE LIKELY TO
GIVE THEM 48 HOURS’ NOTICE, BUT
THAT MAY NOT ALWAYS BE THE CASE. AN MIT SPOKESPERSON TOLD THE
GLOBE THAT THEY WOULD BE SHARING
SIMILAR INFORMATION WITH THE
FOREIGN SCHOLARS ADDING THAT,
MIT HAS BEEN CLEAR ABOUT THE
VALUE OF OUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY AND OF THE FREE FLOW OF
SCIENTIFIC IDEAS. WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE
DEDICATION, IMAGINATION, AND
PERSEVERANCE OF EVERY SCHOLAR
HERE AT MIT. AN ICE SPOKESPERSON TOLD THE
PAPER, IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS
HAVE BEEN MAKING INSPECTION
VISITS TO SMALL AND BUSINESS AND
LARGE CORPORATIONS THAT HIRE
SUCH STUDENTS SINCE 2016, BUT THEY ARE INCREASING
