Ecotourism – Jeju, South Korea

We are in Jeju Island which is basically a dormant volcano located in the south of South Korea. Due to the geography, topography and climate of the island nature-based tourism and more specifically ecotourism have been developing here. Ecotourism is that form of environmentally responsible tourism that involves travel and visitation to relatively undisturbed natural areas with the object of enjoying, admiring and studying the nature as well as any cultural aspect found in these areas through a process which promotes conservation, has a low impact on the environment and on culture and favorites the active and socially economically beneficial involvement of local communities. Ecotourism takes place in natural environment and often occurs in protected areas, national parks and World Heritage Sights. Ecotourism places a high value on education through travel and also integrates local communities with the purpose of benefiting them through Ecotourism. Ecotourism has been a subject of many certification schemes in order to reduce the practice of greenwashing. Greenwashing is the practice where operators of tourism, design products that resemble ecotourism, but actually have little regard for local communities and the impact on the environment. And through certification schemes such practices are reduced to ensure that tourists purchase genuine ecotourism products.
