Hi, my name is Janeth Lessmann. I’m a biologist from Venezuela, but I’ve been working for many years in Ecuador on biodiversity conservation. I’m a CSF-ICAA Research Fellow and my project is “Integrating Economic Costs to Set Priorities for Species Conservation in the Amazon.” It’s an inspiring project for me because it takes the step of mixing pure biology with other fields, like economics which is super important for generating proposals that are more realistic and feasible. The idea is that when we plan protected areas, we consider where the important species are, but also where we can minimize costs and make conservation more effective. I think this is a cool advance because our work can be more relevant for policy and have a bigger impact on conservation by providing information that’s useful for government, giving them proposals that integrate economic dimensions.
